So this is it, folks - the complete line-up for Beyond the Gates 2020. It has been a daunting, but yet rewarding task to get it all together. And needless to say, we’re immensely proud of what will be our biggest and most ambitious edition of Beyond the Gates yet!
There are so many highlights in the pipeline that it’s difficult to know where to start. But having Candlemass performing the seminal classic, “Nightfall”, as a runner up to the reunion of the century, namely Mercyful Fate, in the iconic Grieghallen will be beyond epic. “Don’t Break the Oath” and “Melissa” are two of the most treasured albums in Heavy Metal history and we can’t wait for King Diamond and the band to dig into these timeless classics in what will be one of the bands most intimate concert this season.
The idea for this year’s festival, dubbed Purgatory, was to make all four day conceptually stronger and more diverse than before. We’re trying to establish Wednesday as our alternative day and this year it has an esoteric vibe topped by the phenomenon that is Heilung’s amplified history. The Wednesday line-up also sees us delving into dark blues and classic rock with Nergal’s Me and That Man and the addition of Swedish occult rock masters, Year of the Goat. Fleshed out by the hypnotic and mesmerizing tones of two of Norway’s finest extreme metal bands, Gaahls WYRD and Vemod, Beyond the Gates 2020 will be kicked off in style.
Thursday is well known turf for most of our regulars, this is the day when it gets dark and proper old school. Sodom will perform a selection of their finest tunes from “In the Sign of Evil”, “Obsessed By Cruelty” and “Agent Orange”, alongside some of the material from their killer new EP, “Out of the Frontline Trench”. Sodom will be joined by a finely selected of black death, black thrash and black metal bands. Enter 1349, Dead Congregation, Whoredom Rife, Darvaza and Possession.
For the Metal Day this year, that will take place in the aforementioned Grieghallen, Mercyful Fate and Candlemass will be supported by two rising stars in the metal community. Idle Hands and Tribulation. The former has been touring relentlessly on the back of their critically acclaimed album, “Mana”. Their post punk infused heavy metal has been subjected to the top spots on most year end lists for 2019. Tribulation is known for their impeccable song writing and some absolutely stellar live performances. What a way to kick off the proceedings that day.
The festival will be rounded off by a prog metal night that should make fans of the genre go bonkers. Opeth is touring their biggest albums to date, “In Cauda Veneum”. Expect a set that will take you on a journey through the bands many spectacular moments including the highlight of this new masterpiece.
Over the last few years, our friends in Enslaved have made a tradition of playing through a full album at the festival. This year the time has come for Enslaved to present one of modern prog metals finest hours, “Below the Lights”. Knowing how amazing their renditions of “Vikingligr Veldi” and “Frost” have been earlier, we’re convinced that this show will be no different. Favorites Hexvessel and crossover masters Chapel of Disease joins in on what will be a prog extravaganza not to be missed. The festival will be capped off in style by Perturbator doing what Perturbator does best, kick people on their feet.
If you can’t get your fix by attending the evening concerts, Kvarteret is the answer. Visit the Terratur Possessions showcase, featuring Costa Rica’s Umbra Conscientia and Icelandic Drottinn on Thursday the 20th. The following day, Friday 21st, two events will take place at the same place, the black metal feast featuring Archgoat and Norway’s own Djevel in the afternoon. Finally the LA based club concept Born For Burning will host an afterparty at Kvarteret featuring Swedish heavy metal upstarts, Mystik.
